Hermeneutics - 3

SSamuel 2023. 6. 22. 05:59

3. Necessity of Bible interpretation because generation gap.

There are times when we do not understand the Bible according to the language difference, misunderstanding, etc. of the change of generation.

1) Historical gap:

The situation differs according to the historical differences between the countries reading the Bible and the countries recorded in the Bible.

2)  Cultural gap:

For example, “Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss, 1 Thess. 5:26.” It should not be thought of as kissing all the brothers and sisters of all states today.

Depending on the culture difference, you can use the personnel method commonly used in the culture.

3) Linguistic gap:

The Bible is written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

You have to think about whether this language has problems in the translation process, has the same meaning in the language you are trying to translate, and has not been misunderstood with similar pronunciation.

For example, Kaka (Korean: a cookie eaten by young children; Kannada: poop) and wife (Korean: wife; Kannada: elephant).

4. Ignorance of Human being

Without basic knowledge and without biblical knowledge

And without the interpretive knowledge of the Bible, the Bible cannot be understood.

1) Luke 22:19 Jesus said at the Lord's Supper, "This is my body for you."

This is a symbolic expression.

However, by misinterpreting this, the substance (body) undergoes a chemical change and becomes a rice cake for Holy Communion.

This is Transubstantiation.

Roman Catholic Church has followed this transubstantiation.

2) John 11:11, when Nazarus died, Jesus said, "Our friend Lazarus is asleep." The disciples said, "Lord, it would be better if he fell asleep" (John 11:12). Jesus expressed that he sleeps dead. However, the disciples misunderstood that they were actually asleep.

Louis Berkhof said, "Sin has darkened human comprehension."

5.  Interpreting conflicting verses

1) John 5:31, "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.”

8:14 Jesus answered, "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going.

* The sentences above seem to be against each other.

But it is not true.

Because John 5:31 says that Jesus said to the Pharisees who did not believe in Jesus to explain.

And 8:14 is to show that Jesus is equal to God.

2)  Matthew 27: 5 and Acts 1: 18

Mtt 27:05 Judas threw silver into the sanctuary, and withdrew himself and hung himself.

(This verse explains the way of death.)

Acts 01:18 after this man bought a field with an injustice, his body became tumultuous and the stomach exploded, and the intestines flowed out.

(This verse explains the outcome after death.)
